Following major weight loss or prior surgery, skin may lose so much elasticity that it cannot “snap back” to meet the reduced contours of the body. This excess skin can hang in loose folds at the underarms and thighs, which creates its own health and hygiene problems, such as rashes within skin folds, infections, skin thinning and poor posture. In these cases, body lift, or body contouring surgery, can alleviate the problem, enhance your appearance and restore confidence. Body lift surgery can be carried out in one procedure, or in stages and usually entails removing excess skin and lifting the buttocks, abdomen, waist, hips and thighs.
Body lifts are a comprehensive body shaping procedure. It includes abdominoplasty, which removes excess fat and skin from the abdominal area, and tightens weakened or separated muscles for a flatter, firmer tummy and narrower waist that is more in proportion to your body type.
The incision follows the circumference of the waist, low enough to be concealed beneath underwear. Liposuction is sometimes performed for an improved contour. The entire procedure can take around six hours, with patients remaining in hospital for up to a week. You may have to wear a supportive garment in hospital to help reduce bruising and swelling, and continue wearing this for a few weeks after surgery. While your new body contour is immediately noticeable, final results typically develop in around one to two years.
Patients who have undergone massive weight loss may also require loose skin to be removed from the arms, breasts and medial thigh.
